can I become a certified Dockside Monitor?

Catch Data Limited, Nova Scotia's largest dockside monitoring
company employ's 100 Certified Dockside Monitors throughout Nova Scotia
and Newfoundland. Dockside Monitors are deployed by our operations center
to greet fishing vessels at dockside and witness the entire weighout
of the vessel's catch.
Deployments are based on actual fishing activity and may occur at any
time of day or night. Some fisheries follow distinct seasonal patterns.
Therefor a Monitor's hours of work are dependent on actual fishing activity
around our coast and can vary greatly. In most cases a Monitor will
become familiar with the fishing patterns in the communities in their
area and will learn to understand, and even predict when their services
will be needed.
ACD is always interested to learn of people living around our province
who are seeking part time or seasonal work that involves being on the
wharf and dealing with fishers landing their catch. For an individual
to become a certified dockside Monitor an individual must have:
1) successful completion of High School or equivalent knowledge and
experience in the fishing industry;
2) Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status;
3) A certificate of conduct from a police agency;
4) No violations of the Fisheries Act or any of it's regulations within
the the previous two years;
5) Met arm's length requirements (as set forth in regulations sec 39.1
(a) (b) and (c), cannot hold a commercial fishing license, cannot be
a buyer, processor or transporter of fish etc.);
6) Satisfactory physical condition to carry out duties;
7) Valid drivers license and reliable vehicle; and must
8) Be mature, responsible and reliable. Eligible candidates must attend
a weeklong training program and successfully pass a written examination.
Once these requirements have been met the candidate will be issued a
Federal Government picture ID identifying them as Certified Dockside
Monitor. Employed by ACD, newly certified Monitors will participate
in hands-on training on the wharf actually conducting weighouts. Once
fully trained and the Candidate is comfortable, he/she will be deployed
to conduct weighouts in their area.
